Phos-Bind is a medication used to manage hyperphosphatemia in pets suffering from kidney disease. It contains a single active ingredient, Aluminum Hydroxide, that binds to excess phosphate in the body, limiting the absorption of this harmful mineral from food. The medication is available in powder form, which is easily mixable with wet-food or liquid. The powder is incredibly fine and non-gritty, making it easy to administer. The directions for use depend on your vet's recommendation and your pet's weight. However, the label recommends a dosage of 100 mg/kg body weight, which should be adjusted based on serum phosphorus levels determined every 2-4 weeks. Customers' experiences with Phos-Bind seem to be mixed. Some report that it drastically improved their pet's condition, and their pet didn't even notice it in their food. Others report that their pets refused to eat food containing the medication. Therefore, some pet owners have had to use a syringe to administer it, and, in some cases, have had to mix it with a food processor to create a specific blend for their pet.
