It can be enjoyed as a standalone game or as an expansion to the original Zombicide: Invader. The addition of the darkness mechanic and the unique twist of Xenos/Zombies moving through underground tunnels adds a sense of dread and excitement to the gameplay. The game may require a significant time investment, especially during the initial set up and tutorial stage. However, the rich content and immersive experience make it worth it. The game integrates well with the Invader game and the Black Ops expansion, although the rules regarding the interaction between the different components are not clearly explained. The miniatures in the game are not colored, which may make it slightly difficult to identify characters. Colored rings provided for the bases help alleviate this issue.
